Timely and precise diagnosis is crucial for maximizing positive outcomes. Additionally, accurate diagnosis is essential, as misdiagnosis may result in additional AHT, other forms of trauma to the infant/child, or irreversible harm to the family if AHT is wrongly identified.

After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Recognize the current statistics on abusive head trauma (AHT) in infants and children. 
  • Recall signs, symptoms, and long-term complications of abusive head trauma in infants and children.
  • Identify the treatment for abusive head trauma in infants and children. 
  • Recall signs and symptoms that are not indicative of AHT. 
  • Identify ways of communicating with the health care team findings suggestive of AHT and those findings which are not suggestive AHT. 
  • Recognize strategies for educating families on both the prevention and recognition of AHT.

Margaret-Ann Carno, PhD, MBA, MJ, CPNP, FAAN, has over 25 years of experience in pediatric nursing. She has worked at the bedside, both in acute and critical care pediatrics, and as a primary care pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP). Dr. Carno is a nationally certified primary care PNP and maintains both her RN and NP license in New York state.  She has taught both clinical and didactic content in pediatric nursing and is a frequent guest lecturer on pediatric-related issues at both the undergraduate and the graduate level. She has reviewed pediatric-related and medical-surgical nursing texts and authored two textbooks.
