This course will review the interactions between therapeutic massage and certain medications, taking a closer look at common gastrointestinal (GI) and pain pathologies and the medications used to treat them. This course will help manual therapists develop a safe and effective treatment plan by identifying which medications are used to treat these common pathologies. Having a broader understanding of common symptoms and side effects of these medications will help therapists provide a more informed and effective treatment session. The goal of this course is to give therapists the confidence and knowledge particularly surrounding common GI and pain medications.

  • Recall common gastrointestinal and pain conditions.  
  • Review the common medications utilized for patients experiencing GI and pain conditions. 
  • Discuss the common side effects and contraindications for common GI and pain medications. 
  • Discuss the relationship of therapeutic massage with common GI and pain conditions and their associated medications.

Claudia Phillips, LMT, is a licensed massage therapist and internationally certified yoga teacher with over 10 years of experience. She graduated from Pacific College of Health and Science in New York with an associate degree in massage therapy, specializing initially in sports, orthopedic, and prenatal massage. Claudia holds massage therapy licenses in New York, Florida, and Virginia, along with certification from the MBLEX examination. Her journey into teaching yoga naturally complemented her massage therapy practice, allowing her to contribute to the physical and emotional well-being of her students, clients, and herself. Professionally, she divides her time between serving as the lead therapist at a five-star resort in Panama and working as an independent contractor for massage therapy offices in Virginia. In both locations, Claudia develops and refines continuing education courses for manual therapists. On a personal note, Claudia is a mother, surfer, and amateur chef. She strives to infuse her courses with the same level of creativity, clarity, and intention that she brings to each massage or yoga class.
