Course Description
The body of evidence concerning the use of body weight support for gait training has grown immensely over the past 2 decades. Favor has waxed and waned regarding this training modality, but what do we really know about its efficacy, utility and cost effectiveness?
In this course we will explore past and present ideas about "locomotor training," and in what directions the research literature is guiding us regarding appropriate applications in the clinic.

Hour 1
- A short history of locomotor training in physical therapy
- A review of foundational research in animal studies
- Application to human studies including early and later studies
Hour 2
- A comparison of past and present studies to determine key differences, and decipher their significance.
- A description of the limitations of established treatment paradigms and updated concepts for contemporary clinical practice.

Professional Objectives:
- Demonstrate understanding of the main contributions of therapy theory to current concepts of gait training
- Identify the neurological components of gait as described in animal research
- Compare and contrast past and present findings in locomotor research
- Describe the fallacy of relying too much on speed dependent gait training
- Identify latest trends in locomotor training research and their clinical application
Criteria for Completion:
A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.
