Over the next decade, we will see an increase in the number of seniors, relative to other demographics.  In order to provide the greatest care, have pertinent perspective, and minimize any implicit bias, it’s important for healthcare professionals to understand this population.  This course will provide insight, current information, and suggestions to working, treating, and interacting with an aging population in an appropriate way.

Course Outline:

Hour 1

  • Review attributes of a senior
  • Explore U.S. census information pertaining to seniors and health
  • Discuss impact of disease on aging
  • Review healthy lifestyle components for prevention and successful aging
  • Discuss activities of daily living (ADLs)

Hour 2

  • Discuss impact of living environment and actual transitions while aging.
  • Explore various living accommodations for bodily changes caused by aging.
  • Recognize ways and means to improve aging experience within the home or community
  • Discuss positive and negative aspects of senior housing choices

Hour 3

  • Discuss impact of physical and mental changes on ADLs
  • Explore impact of mental capacity on ability to make personal choices
  • Discuss importance of safety, choice, and wellbeing
  • Identify aspects of age-friendly living
  • Explore impact of personal relationships, including grief and loss

Hour 4

  • Discussion impact of spousal loss on a senior's wellbeing and social network
  • Understand importance of social support
  • Explore ways to stay engaged while aging
  • Understand the impact of relationships in later years
  • Discuss caregiving and impact of the caregiver's role
  • Insight to the life of a caregiver

This course is intended to instruct the professional to work, treat, and interact with an aging population in an appropriate way.

  • Recognize caregiver roles, impact, and potential outcomes.

Joy Siegel spent the past 15 years working in the nonprofit sector as a fundraising consultant. While doing so she became especially partial to working in the social service sector, especially with senior adults. In 2012 Joy achieved a lifelong goal of obtaining a doctoral degree, graduating from Nova Southeastern University with an EdD in Organizational Leadership and Gerontology. 

Armed with her education, experience in the social sector, and personal experience as a caregiver to her mother who has been battling Parkinson’s Disease for 20 years, Joy was ready to switch careers and become an Intergenerational Coach.  Currently Joy and her partner, Hanna Fink, have developed a sphere of top-notch service providers whose sole purpose in their respective field is to meet the needs of families dealing with the challenges of aging and to assist in providing seniors with the best quality of life.
