Course Goals:
The goal of this basic, introductory course is to provide rehabilitation professionals with an understanding of the transmission and prevention of HIV, the care of persons with HIV, and the issues of living with HIV. Major progress has been made in understanding the many facets of human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency disease (HIV/AIDS). Inroads into detection, immune response, and transmission have helped in the development of therapeutic interventions, including four-drug combination therapies. The importance of these drugs and their implication in the health care of HIV patients are discussed in this course. Because of the fast-paced change in HIV knowledge, rehabilitation professionals may not be aware of new advances, current treatments, and interventions. Recent changes in terminology and staging are covered. Legal and ethical issues, including recent changes in testing, confidentiality, and reporting requirements are discussed.

After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the basic pathophysiology of HIV.
- Identify the stages of HIV infection and their associated signs and symptoms.
- Identify routes of transmission, risk factors, and prevention strategies for HIV.
- Identify assessment guidelines and treatment regimens for HIV/AIDS.
- Recognize the common psychosocial responses and coping activities for a person living with HIV infection.
- Evaluate the ethical and legal considerations for HIV/AIDS.

Amber Armstead, DrPH, OTR, BCPR is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the UTMB School of Health Professions. She received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Masters of Occupational Therapy from the University of Texas Medical Branch and her Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.Dr. Armstead has presented and published peer-reviewed research on health disparities and chronic HIV among marginalized communities. She has presented at regional and national conferences. Her research interests include total wellness among marginalized populations, community health, and chronic disease management among people living with HIV and neurodegenerative conditions. Her clinical experience includes adult neurological based rehabilitation specializing in spinal cord injuries and neurodegenerative conditions, physical disabilities across the life span along with community health promotion.
