Topics include analyzing demographic trends, identifying Healthy People 2030 goals, the interrelationship between social determinants and aging, theories of aging, gerotranscendence theory, psychological strategies for mental health and resilience, primary and secondary aging, and applying normal aging principles for enhanced quality of life. Participants will be ready to provide comprehensive, person-centered care; while promoting well-being and healthy aging for older adults.

This course equips healthcare providers with essential knowledge and skills for effective care of older adults and their families. Topics include analyzing demographic trends, identifying Healthy People 2030 goals, the interrelationship between social determinants and aging, theories of aging, gerotranscendence theory, psychological strategies for mental health and resilience, primary and secondary aging, and applying normal aging principles for enhanced quality of life. Learning Outcomes: 

After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Examine the factors influencing the health of older adults, including demographic trends, social determinants of health, and the effects of poverty and technology.  
  • Identify relevant goals from Healthy People 2030 to guide nursing care for older adults, promoting their health and well-being.  
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nurse's influential role in shaping the health behaviors of older adults through health promotion, education, advocacy, and cultural competence.  
  • Examine and assess the interrelationship between social determinants of health, including family dynamics, cultural influences, community resources, housing situations, access to care, and policy issues, and their impact on older adults' health outcomes and experiences.  
  • Identify traditional and contemporary theories of aging, including programmed theories, damage/error theories, and sociological theories, to deepen understanding of the aging process.  
  • Recognize psychological theories of aging, such as gerotranscendence theory, to propose practical strategies and interventions that promote positive mental health, adaptive coping, and resilience among older individuals.  
  • Identify normal aging principles to solve practical problems, develop strategies, and enhance the quality of life for older individuals while addressing manifestations of ageism and promoting inclusive and person-centered care.

Brenda Williams, RN, MBA, Ph.D., has worked in many areas of nursing, including clinical areas in medical-surgical nursing, emergency department, obstetrics, pediatrics, cardiac step-down, and various intensive care units. She has worked as a travel nurse, in the prison setting, in nursing management, and areas related to insurance, workers’ compensation, Medicaid, Medicare, and education. She was a certified case manager for 24 years and holds an executive MBA from Franklin University, Columbus, Ohio, and a Ph.D. in leadership and organizational change from Walden University. Dr. Williams is a research chair for Indiana Wesleyan University in the Doctor of Business Administration program and an adjunct professor at Ohio Christian University.
