Clinicians working with students struggling at grade level are committed to raising their student’s achievement ability by creating opportunities to learn. In this course, clinicians will learn new techniques that can help support, motivate, and encourage these students without enabling them. Clinicians can do much to minimize “learned helpless” behavior that many of these students exhibit. This course will indicate how to offer support to parents and partner with them to cultivate a healthy learning mindset which will ultimately lead children to develop academic skills that are self-directed.

Hour 1 

  • Introduction to Non-Cognitive Skills: Perseverance, Effort, and Executive Skills that ensure academic success 
  • Define Learned Helplessness 
  • Discuss Pressures modern children face

  • Help children overcome their learning challenges 
  • Teach children to enjoy the process of learning 
  • Aid children in developing Positive self-talk

  • Select 4 skills needed to ensure academic success perseverance, inhibition/emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility and working memory skills
  • Identify the differences between a growth mindset and fixed mindset
  • Identify 5 activities to teach children to understand neural development
  • Identify appropriate ways to praise children and teach children that mistakes are opportunities to learn
  • Recognize Executive Skills of Cognitive flexibility, working memory and Emotional regulation.
  • Identify techniques to improve client’s working memory
  • Identify strategies to improve client’s Cognitive Flexibility 8. Identify strategies to develop emotional regulation skills in clients.
