This course is intended for physical therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training practitioners who address balance impairments and work to reduce falls in their patients and communities.  This course defines balance and its components, describes how the various balance issues fall into these component categories and categorizes these impairments accordingly.  It will outline how to assess balance and interpret the many varied assessment tools available.  Taking this information, clinicians will see how to systematically approach balance rehabilitation, including how to prioritize needs, account for patient background and resources, and work towards long term falls reduction.  Finally, this course discusses current guidelines for community level fall prevention strategies and how therapists can be more involved with this process.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Differentiate the complex components of balance, including perceptual, processing and motor contributions, that are needed to participate in daily and occupational activities.
  • Classify balance impairments based on deficits in perceptual, processing, and motor skills.
  • Categorize and assess patients objectively by understanding what each evaluation tool reveals about the system and components of balance.
  • Utilize assessment findings and current evidence to develop effective interventions for specific balance deficits, leading to improve patient outcomes and functional performance.

Criteria for Completion: Criteria for Completion: A score of 75% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 75% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved

Geoff Mosley, PT, NCS

Geoff Mosley has been a licensed physical therapist since 1997, when he graduated from the University of Missouri Columbia.  He has been board certified in neurological physical therapy from the American Physical Therapy Association Board of Specialties since 2003. He has earned Vestibular Rehabilitation certification at Emory University’s annual course, as well as certification, from RESNA, as a Certified Assistive Technology Practitioner.

Mr. Mosley has conducted rehabilitation research on topics including neural tension in patients with stroke, body weight supported gait training, the Functional Gait Assessment, and balance training utilizing video game technology. Mr. Mosley has been an adjunct faculty member at Missouri State University, and has guest lectured at other universities around the state.  He is an item writer for the NCS exam through the Specialization Academy of Content Experts, which serves the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.  Geoff has presented continuing education nationwide at various professional conferences, and has authored numerous online courses.
