This course is intended for physical therapists and athletic trainers who evaluate and treat clients with squat dysfunctions. This course discusses how to evaluate a proper squat and how to intervene when a movement dysfunction is present. This course takes an evidence-based approach to various squat interventions, including electromyographical studies, to determine optimal muscular activation during exercise. The course provides recommendations for exercise interventions that correlate to each squat deviation.

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Classify the major muscles and joint movements involved in performing a functional squat. 
  • Predict the correct movement pattern of a functional squat. 
  • Classify the causative factors of compensation during the functional squat. 
  • Relate the significance of the “knees over toes” position during the functional squat to optimize client performance. 
  • Relate the concept of regional interdependence at multiple body segments in relation to the functional squat. 
  • Connect current evidence-based research to determine the extent of muscle activation during functional squat variations and interventions. 
  • Produce treatment interventions to promote improved functional squat movement patterns.

Criteria for Completion: Criteria for Completion: A score of 75% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 75% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved

Dr. Ryan Wadas PT, DPT earned his bachelor's degree in human biology from the University of Kansas in 2005 and his Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy in 2009 from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Wadas has over 12 years of outpatient orthopedic PT experience, the majority of which he served as a clinical instructor working with PT and PTA students. He also has 9 years of experience in academics; Dr. Wadas is currently a professor at South University’s PTA program in Tampa, FL with 7 years as adjunct faculty at Nova Southeastern University’s DPT program in Clearwater, FL. Dr. Wadas has advanced training and coursework in spinal manipulation through the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy (AAMT), the McKenzie Method to Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), vestibular therapy training, Myofascial Practitioner Cupping Certification, and Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA).
