Cultural competency is not a measured achievement but rather a continual awareness of implicit personal biases toward others. Implicit biases are learned unconscious views about particular people. This video aims to assist the learner in recognizing and reducing unintentional preconceptions.

Hour 1
- Differentiation of race from ethnicity and cultural influences of each
- Discussion of multiple religious influences on health care decision making to include Christianity, Judaism, Isalam, Jehovah’s Witness, Latter Day Saints, Hindu, Buddhist
- Differentiate gender from sexual orientation and the impact on health and health care practices
- Health care issues for which veterans are at higher risk
- Lifelong influence of the military/veteran culture
Hour 2
- Types of disabilities
- Impact of disability on the person seeking care
- Implicit biases of health care providers relative to persons with disabilities

At the completion of this video, participants will be able to:
- Define key concepts in cultural competency, implicit bias, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Analyze evidence-based data that presents cultural beliefs and determinants of health care amongst the broad spectrum of cultures practices.
- Evaluate influences on healthcare from various cultural backgrounds including race, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ, and religion.
- Consider cultural determinants of the military and veteran population.
- Discuss cultural influence and health disparities among persons with disabilities.
