We’re excitedly counting down the days until Rehab Rally Virtual Weekend, HomeCEUConnection.com’s innovative new way to attend a continuing education conference. Unlike a traditional live on-site event, Rehab Rally Virtual delivers the full conference experience right to your computer! It’s new, it’s exciting and we really cannot wait. The virtual event features 5 live, interactive continuing education sessions from some of our most popular speakers including Stacey Davis, OTR/L, CKTP, who is presenting “Resistive Exercise for Stroke Rehab” on Saturday, August 25th at 9am.
HomeCEUConnection.com: Can you tell us a bit more about your Rehab Rally Virtual session?
Stacey Davis: We’ll be looking at the scientific basis and clinical research of resistance training, dosing of elastic resistance exercise, and exercise applications with patients of all levels, and the integrated uses of elastic resistance. We’ll also be integrating balls, balance and stability trainers with a variety of exercises to improve patient’s functional levels.
HCEU: What benefits does resistive exercise have for stroke rehab over more traditional methods?
SD: Resistive exercise adds variety of exercise applications to patient treatments, allows combination of bands, balls and balance techniques that challenge the patient not only neuromuscular, but sensory and vestibular as well. With resistive band, you can work in all positions. You can focus on functional, repetitive techniques that facilitate progress. Theraband provides a wealth of objective information as well as scientific research. It has so many integrated uses
HCEU: How long have you been using resistive exercise as a rehab treatment?
SD: I have been using resistive exercises for 21 years; but for the past 4 years have had the clinical research, the scientific basis, and learned how to correctly dose my patients as well as have integrated a variety of exercises, balls, balance and stability trainers in an effective way to improve patients functional levels with a deeper knowledge and understanding
HCEU: What inspired you to specialize in resistive exercise?
SD: After being an OT for 17 years at the time I was offered a certification as a resistive band instructor course, I knew that there was more to learn that would help me progress my patients. I had used resistive bands over the years, and had used it with all types of patients in all kinds of settings, but felt that there was so much more that I could learn about it and then share it with others. And I found out there was! There are many types of ways to hold the band, many positions that the band can be used in, combinations of bands, balls, and balance techniques that can be used with variety of levels of patients, and all kinds of scientific research out there to back up any of the techniques utilized to progress patients.
