Course Description
Course Description:
Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstructions have recently reached “epidemic” proportions at the professional level. In addition to surgical reconstruction, many non-operative injuries occur in competitive overhead athletes. Lecture will be implemented to achieve the stated objectives. The instructor will provide an overarching review of the literature as it pertains to elbow injury epidemic in overhead athletes. Participants will be able to reflect on their current rehabilitation and return to play plan for elbow injuries and make appropriate modifications for future rehabilitation interactions.

Course Goals & Objectives:
Course Goals:
It is essential for athletic trainers to have a firm understanding of the physiological healing constraints of specific elbow injuries and establish an evidence-based rehabilitation progression to facilitate a successful return to sport. In addition, it is imperative that professionals take a proactive approach and begin to promote prevention and wellness in these athletes while developing sports medicine techniques to respond to these injuries. Appropriate evidence-based strategies, including upper extremity, core, and lower extremity strengthening, should be implemented throughout the entire rehabilitation process to prepare for initiation of a sport-specific functional progression. Communication is critical between the athletic trainer, physician, and athlete to assure increased likelihood of successful outcomes.
Professional Objectives:
- Recognize the significant increase in incidence of elbow injuries recently in overhead athletes.
- Identify guidelines to implement to reduce upper extremity injury risk in overhead athletes.
- Identify specific exercises to implement during various stages of the rehabilitation program.
- Identify return to play plan, including a return to throwing progression, based on functional criteria.
- Recognize the importance of a proactive approach with pre-season screening to decrease the risk of overuse upper extremity injuries.
