Course Description:
Parkinson's Disease: Disease, Progression, Dysphagia and Treatment provides an overview of the disease process, theories behind the disease and impact on the whole patient. Diagnosis, symptoms, medications, use of complimentary alternative (CAM) and potential side effects will be outlined. The seminar will provide a detailed review of dysphagia intervent including behavioral, rehabilitation, sensorial, compensatory methods, adaptive equipment and mealtime strategies.

Course Outline:
Hour 1
- What is PD? As well as the theories behind the disease.
- Symptoms with PD and the impact on the body functions as well as the connection to the swallow
- Co-morbidities that occur with PD
Hour 2
- Medications - traditional as well as complimentary alternative medicine - CAM will be reviewed - effectiveness of these on PD progression, severity and the swallow.
- Studies will be reviewed on the impact of pharmacology. Treatments such as DBS and complimentary treatments will be reviewed.
Hour 3
- Instrumental Assessments will be discussed - what studies have shown occurs in the stages of swallow and impact on airway protection and risk of penetration/aspiration.
- Specific therapeutic interventions will be provided that may improve labial, lingual function, airway protection and increase swallow safety at mealtime
