This comprehensive resource covers a broad array of research strategies available to massage therapists to give them the tools they need to be knowledgeable readers of research literature, as well as active researchers.

The primary focus of the book is on the quantitative aspect of research that encompasses the principal types of studies most extensively used in the various health care professions, specifically massage therapy. Extensive coverage is also given to the qualitative and integrative research categories that are progressively gaining recognition among researchers in various health science disciplines and professions.

  1. Identify and differentiate between quantitative research and contextual/interpretive-oriented research strategy.
  2. Identify and differentiate between essential features of the case study research method, phenomenological research method, and the grounded theory research method.
  3. Recognize the synthesis-oriented research strategy and its six research methods.
  4. Define primary analysis.
  5. Recognize 6 massage therapy theories.

Glenn M. Hymel, EdD, LMT

Glenn M. Hymel is Professor and former Chair of the Department of Psychology at Loyola University New Orleans. Glenn has been published extensively in renowned education and psychology journals, his research having been presented at various national and international conferences. He is the author of “Research Methods for Massage & Holistic Therapies” as well as a contributing author of “Clinical Massage in the Healthcare Setting”.

Glenn Hymel is the Founding Executive Editor of the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, Associate Editor of the Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies, and an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Massage Science. He graduated from the Blue Cliff School of Therapeutic Massage in Metairie, LA, and operates a manual therapy practice in New Orleans. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Massage Therapy Foundation. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Loyola University New Orleans and his doctorate from the University of New Orleans.
