Course Description
Course Description:
Rehabilitation professionals evaluate and treat older adults in a variety of settings. Older adults are a complex population due to the many changes that occur with aging to the systems of the body as well as the many comorbidities that can further impact these changes. It is critical that all rehabilitation professionals have an understanding of these common changes that occur with aging and these changes impact patient care.
This course will discuss the joint mobility impairments, muscle performance impairments, changes in motor performance as well as postural dysfunction that commonly occurs in older adults. This course will not only discuss these changes but also highlight how rehabilitation professionals should assess and treat these patients based on these common impairments. Recommended outcome measures will also be discussed so that maximum patient outcomes can be achieved.

Course Goals & Objectives:
Course Goals:
This course is designed to guide the clinicians working with older adults to have a thorough understanding of how aging affects joint mobility, muscle performance, motor performance and posture so that assessments, interventions, and outcomes can be maximized.
Professional Objectives:
- List three changes that occur in the connective tissue with aging.
- Identify which direction of movement at the ankle and hip are most limited with aging and what impact this has on function.
- List 2 tests and measures that can be used to assess joint mobility and will ultimately then dictate what joint limitations are addressed in treatment.
- List 2 ways in which sarcopenia impacts the muscles of older adults
- List 2 interventions that can address muscle performance deficits in older adults
- List 3 common motor or sensory impairments that can occur in older adults.
- List 2 outcome measures that are recommended for patients with lower extremity motor control deficits.
- List 3 types of feedback that are often given when engaged in motor learning tasks.
- List 2 age related changes that contribute to changes in posture
- Recognize 3 interventions that are beneficial to treat postural dysfunction in older adults
