Course Description
Course Description:
Rehabilitation professionals working with older adults encounter individuals with deficits in strength, endurance and aerobic capacity regularly. It is critical that rehabilitation professionals are skilled in screening and assessing these deficits and adequately performing interventions to address them.
This course will not only discuss the causes and contributing factors to these deficits but it was also discussed assessment tools, evaluation techniques, standardized assessments and patient interventions. The information introduced will be summarized at the end of the course and presented in a case study.

Course Goals & Objectives:
Course Goals:
While rehabilitation professionals have knowledge of exercise prescription, many do not have an understanding of how the prescription variables change for older adults with strength and aerobic capacity deficits. Having this in-depth understanding will impact treatment effectiveness and outcomes for these patients.
Professional Objectives:
- Identify 3 conditions that older adults are more susceptible to when they are physically inactive.
- Identify 3 key principles of exercise prescription.
- List 2 ways that the intensity of aerobic exercise can be assessed or monitored in older adults.
- Identify how 1 repetition maximum (1 RM) can be utilized to prescribe an appropriate level of strengthening exercises in older adults.
- List 2 common muscles that need stretching in older adults
- List 3 factors that could be responsible for impaired aerobic capacity in older adults
- Cardiovascular disease risk factors should be assessed for in all patients with impaired aerobic capacity. List 5 of these risk factors.
- Identify 3 of the tests and measures that are utilized to assess aerobic capacity in older adults.
- List 3 aerobic exercise contraindications for older adults
- Identify 5 factors that impact prognosis in older adults with aerobic capacity impairments.
- Recognize 3 interventions that can be utilized with older adults to improve aerobic capacity.
