As the baby boomers continue to grow the ranks of the elderly population in the United States, therapists are facing ever greater number of geriatric patients that are either recovering from injuries related to falls or are at risk of falling. We are placed in a unique role of identifying these patients, assessing their risk factors for falling, and successfully intervening to reduce their risk for future falls.
This course is designed to break down the complicated concepts and help you define balance with a modern day perspective. You will receive insights into how to successfully evaluate balance and fall risk. Finally, you will gain knowledge of the latest ideas about intervention, including the role of technology in the clinic.

- Hierarchy and components of balance

- Age related changes to normal balance in elderly adults
- Disease related changes to balance

- Define falls including current statistics
- Identify common causes for falls

- Introduce concepts for intervention

- Outline assessment procedures and interpretation for the geriatric patient with balance dysfunction

- Outline evidence-based intervention for balance dysfunction in specific areas

- Differentiate intervention for low, moderate, and high-risk fallers
- Discuss impact of new technologies on balance reeducation

This course is intended to instruct the professional on current state of research concerning balance and best practice for clinical intervention.
Professional Objectives:
- Identify the 5 components of the balance hierarchy and how they function
- Recognize the difference between open and closed loop balance control
- Identify the 3 requirements for a successful balance reaction
- Identify age related changes to each of the following 7 areas that can adversely affect balance: Sensory Musculoskeletal Cognitive Cardiovascular Urinary Environmental/Social Psychological
- Identify at least 3 non-age related factors associated with changes in balance in the elderly
- Identify the 2 most important facts to consider regarding falls and the implications on possible treatment
- Identify and detail at least one limitation that can affect balance in each of the following categories: Range of motion/flexibility, muscle strength, sensory, and cognition
- Identify at least 3 balance specific assessment tools and how they are indicated
- Identify at least one intervention for each of the following areas: ROM, Strength, Sensory organization, Verticality, General exercise
- Identify the 3 tenets of balance reeducation
